Music Director
Bel Canto was fortunate to welcome Michael Morgan as our Music Director in 2022.
Since graduating from the University of Western Ontario with a Bachelor of Music in Vocal Performance with concurrent studies in Piano and Music Education, Michael’s career in music has involved performing, teaching, composition and choral conducting.
Numerous GTA choirs have benefited from Michael’s leadership, including Queensmen of Toronto Male Chorus; County Town Singers; Resound, a mixed-voice auditioned choir in Durham Region that he co-founded; and, most recently, Serenata Singers. Michael has also directed musical theatre productions with Oshawa Little Theatre and Whitby Courthouse Theatre. Excellence in music making, music as community building, and fostering and promoting emerging talent are key priorities for Michael, whose love of sharing music is evident in all his undertakings.
Never one to be professionally idle, Michael rounds out his schedule as the Music Director for St. Paul's United Church in Ajax where he also maintains a private teaching studio. In all his “spare time” he loves to cook, bake, read and watch movies with his wife and son.

Collaborative Accompanist
Award-winning pianist and organist Matthew Coons joined Bel Canto Singers in 2024.
Matthew graduated from the University of Toronto with a Bachelor of Music in Organ Performance, winning numerous awards, including first prize in the Toronto Centre competition for young organists in 2008 and second place in the Canadian National Organ Playing competition in 2009. He has since obtained a Bachelor of Education degree in Vocal Music from Brock University.
Since 2014 he has been the Principal Accompanist for the Toronto Welsh Male Voice Choir. During his career, Matthew has served as Organist and Pianist at a number of churches in Toronto including Grace Church On-The-Hill, Runnymede United Church, and Dewi Sant Welsh United Church.
While dazzling us with his virtuoso piano playing, Matthew continues to enhance his musical skills at summer workshops in choral conducting and vocal pedagogy.
